  • The texts are at B1+ level, so they can include unknown words whose meaning can be guessed.
  • The answer must come from the text, not from what merely seems likely.

Sample questions

Question 1 · Reading comprehension

When Lena Novak moved to a small town by the sea, she expected a quiet life. Instead, she found a problem: the local library was about to close because too few people used it. Lena, a retired engineer, had an idea. She asked the owner of an empty shop in the main street if she could use it for free for three months, and she filled it with books nobody wanted. Anyone could take a book, and nobody had to bring it back. At first people were suspicious. Some thought she was selling something. But after a few weeks, children started coming after school and older neighbours stopped by for a chat. By the end of the summer, the council had noticed the crowds and offered to keep the library open if volunteers helped. Lena was the first to sign up. "I didn't save anything," she says. "I just gave people a reason to meet."

What was the problem Lena found when she moved?

  1. She could not find work.
  2. The shop had no customers.
  3. The library might close.
  4. Her flat was too noisy.

Answer: The library might close.

The text says the local library "was about to close because too few people used it".

Question 2 · Language reactions in language use tasks

Complete the dialogue. A: Shall we go to the cinema tonight? B: ____ I have to study for a test.

  1. Sorry, I can't.
  2. You're welcome.
  3. Yes, I'd love to.
  4. Here you are.

Answer: Sorry, I can't.

B gives a reason for not going, so a refusal fits.

Question 3 · Language use: grammar

I ____ my keys. Can you help me look for them?

  1. was lost
  2. have lost
  3. am losing
  4. lose

Answer: have lost

The Present Perfect shows a past event with a present result: the keys are still missing.

Question 4 · Language use: vocabulary

I need to ____ a decision by Friday.

  1. take off
  2. give up
  3. make
  4. do

Answer: make

The fixed collocation is "make a decision".

Question 5 · Writing

How many words should the written text have at basic level?

  1. 200–250
  2. 100–150
  3. at least 300
  4. 50–120

Answer: 100–150

The guide sets 100–150 words. 50–120 is the eighth-grade exam.
