Topics and revision

Language functions

  • In the exam this part is worth about 15–20% of the result: you choose or write a reply that fits the situation.
  • Read the question to the end: "What is it like?" asks for a description, "Do you like it?" asks whether you like something.
  • Requests, suggestions, apologies and congratulations use fixed phrases: it pays to learn them by heart.
  • Accuracy counts here too: in open tasks a sentence with a serious mistake gets no point.

Reading comprehension

  • This is the largest part of the paper: about 25–30% of the result, with up to 850 words of text in total.
  • Read the question first, then look for the part of the text it refers to.
  • A word from an option appearing in the text does not make the option right: check the meaning of the whole sentence.
  • A question about the main idea or purpose requires looking at the whole text, not one sentence.

Language in use: grammar

  • The guide lists structures at A2 level; language in use is about 15–20% of the result.
  • Present Perfect links the past with the present (since, for, just, yet); Past Simple describes a finished moment (yesterday, ago, in 2020).
  • In a first conditional, "if" takes the Present Simple and the other clause takes "will".
  • The passive is a form of "be" plus a past participle, e.g. was built.
  • "Don't have to" means there is no need; "mustn't" means it is not allowed.
  • In open tasks in this part, grammar and spelling must be fully correct.

Language in use: vocabulary

  • Vocabulary covers the 13 areas in the core curriculum, including home, school, work, shopping, travel, health and nature.
  • Learn whole combinations: do homework, make a mistake, take a photo.
  • Pairs that are often confused: lend and borrow, bring and take, lose and miss.
  • Phrasal verbs such as get up and look for are named directly in the guide.

Writing: e-mail and blog entry

  • You write an e-mail or a blog entry of 50–120 words; it is about 20% of the result.
  • The instruction is in Polish and has three points: each must be not only mentioned but also developed.
  • The beginning of the text is given in the paper, so start from it.
  • The criteria are content (0–4), coherence and logic (0–2), range of language (0–2) and accuracy (0–2).
  • A text shorter than 40 words is marked for content only.

Question 2 · Reading comprehension

Hi Zosia, Thanks for your message. The school trip to Toruń was great! We left at seven on Friday, and I slept on the bus because I went to bed late. First we visited the Gingerbread Museum, where we made our own biscuits. Mine looked terrible but tasted fine! Our teacher wanted to show us the planetarium too, but it was closed for repairs, so we walked along the river instead. I bought a magnet for you, and I'll give it to you when I see you at Sunday's concert. Love, Hania
